Photos from the Visit to Arequipa, Peru, October '05
(earliest at top of page)

I got up early to take this photo of the central plaza from the balcony of the hotel.

One of the highlights of the day was a tour of this cloister.  Rich families paid big money to send
their second daughter here for life at the age of 12.

A beautiful figurine in a niche inside the convent.

A view of Arequipa from the southern outskirts of the city.  Note the original Inca
terraces are still productive for agriculture.

This bridge was built as a train trestle by the same man who built the Eiffel Tower.
Seems like Mr. Eiffel only had one good idea.

El Montanero, a fancy restaurant where we had lunch.

You just don't see this date on many buildings in the US.

After one too many pisco sours and one too many churches I sat down for a rest in the courtyard
of a cathedral.  Rocio snapped this photo because the sign above my head says that anyone caught
sitting on this ancient fountain will be taken to jail.
